About Magdeburg

History

Even though, a myth dates back its origin to 9 B.C., Magdeburg was first officially mentioned in 805. Therefore, the city - the capital of Saxony-Anhalt - celebrated its 1200 year anniversary.

Emperor Otto the Great

The emperor Otto the Great (912-973) had a particular love for Magdeburg his favourite palatinate. His first wife Editha had received Magdeburg as a morning gift at their wedding. In the following centuries Magdeburg developed to a very important religious and economic centre of the Middle Ages.

Magdeburg's history is closely connected with Otto von Guericke who conducted in the 17th century the hemisphere experiment in the town and proved the existence of vacuums. The permanent exhibition in the 'Lukasklause' provides an insight into the life and work of the city's most famous son.

Monastery of Our Lady

Due to the beautiful Monastery of Our Lady and other architectural marvels in Romanesque style, Magdeburg has been referred to as the "pearl" of the Romanesque Road, a touristic highlight in Saxony-Anhalt.

However, Magdeburg's most impressive building, is the cathedral dominating the historical city centre. The cathedral is the first gothic church building in Germany and with a height of 104 m the highest church building of East Germany.
